Resolution of the Alter Summit Assembly - December 2021.
In March, May and June 2022, Colombians will have to go to the polls to elect their new parliaments and a new President. It is a crucial moment for the country which continues, in spite of the signature of a Peace agreement in 2016, to live in the terror and the political violence.

In March, May and June 2022, Colombians will have to go to the polls to elect their new parliaments and a new President. It is a crucial moment for the country which continues, in spite of the signature of a Peace agreement in 2016, to live in the terror and the political violence. Indeed, almost every day, a human rights defender, a trade unionist, an environmental activist or a political opponent is assassinated, especially by the still very active far-right militias.

Today in Colombia there is a real possibility for progressive forces and social movements to oust from power the elite that has governed it since independence, especially its most reactionary tendency represented by "Uribism", named after former president Alvaro Uribe, ally of the big landowners and the death squads, but also of drug lords. The massive and courageous mobilization of the Colombian people this year during the "Paro Nacional" has shown the people’s frustration with poverty, violence and corruption and their ability to organize.

A political change is important for Colombia, but it would also represent a great victory for the entire continent, as the country remains the stronghold of U.S. imperialism in the region and serves as a support for the entire continental right and extreme right to destabilize popular processes in the region.

For all these reasons, Alter Summit wishes to send a message of support to the Colombian social movement, especially to its youth, in order to strengthen them in these next months which are crucial. Alter Summit also asks the European Union for a careful examination and monitoring of the Colombian electoral process, so that the frauds, undoubtedly massive, of the last elections in 2018 are not repeated.
